Affectionately called “Nature’s Candy”
The pigment that gives blueberries their distinctive color is called anthocyanin. Anthocyanin is one of the compounds within blueberries that contribute to their amazing health benefits. Blueberries have been linked to a wide range of health benefits:
• brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease,
• cardiovascular illnesses such as ischemic stroke; metabolic syndrome, a frequent precursor to heart disease, stroke and diabetes;
• improved urinary tract health.
There are many ways to eat blueberries. Blueberries in muffins, pies, in a bowl with milk, in perogies, in pancakes, and of course, by the handful all on their own!
